Town Council moved from the Old Town Hall in 1976 to its current location on Talbot Street as the Town grew and needed more space. The original elegant building built in 1913 was the former town post office. The building is in the Romanesque style with 4 floors and beautiful dormers and corner tower. The war memorial is in the parkette beside the Town Hall and the original bandshell is in Palmer Park directly behind the building.
Aylmer is the largest urban centre in the East End of Elgin and has been the centre of the agricultural hub. Formerly home to Carnation Milk, Aylmer Processed Tomatoes, Imperial Tobacco... all industry which supported the agricultural surrounding area, ... the industry and the buildings for the most part have disappeared. New industry emerges however, such as the IGPC Ethanol Plant in the serviced industrial park.
The quilt block, “Cross Roads”, is illustrated in the Town of Aylmer’s coat of arms colours. It depicts the very busy downtown intersection at the corner of the two well travelled main roads, Talbot and John Streets, due to Catfish Creek running parallel to Talbot Street .
