The White Family arrived in the Springwater area in 1854 purchasing 429 acres of land at Springwater where they built and operated a sawmill and gristmill.
Fred White, one of Albert and Phebe White’s sons, eventually owned the pond, the surrounding woods, the mills and the family home. Fred, a life long bachelor was known far and wide as a lover of nature and a conservationist. It was Fred’s wish that Springwater would be preserved in its natural state.
The Catfish Creek Conservation Authority (CCCA) purchased “White’s Bush” and the surrounding lands from the Estate of Fred White in 1963.
The CCCA has tried to maintain the natural integrity and beauty of the Springwater Forest and Conservation Area over the years by developing a setting that provides a wide variety of outdoor recreation facilities and educational opportunities for the public to enjoy and gain an appreciation for the rich history of the Springwater area.
The quilt block depicting the 4 maple leafs symbolizes the large forest and is hung on the sugar shack at CCCA.
