Aylmer & Malahide Museum - Aylmer

The quilt block, is representative of the Museum's millenium project. The quilt was created by museum volunteers and is a signature quilt - names of the Museum's volunteers are embroidered in the fancy red and white quilt depicting the Canadian flag.

The quilt pattern chosen by the AYLMER - MALAHIDE Museum & Archives is an original creation by their Museum Volunteers as their millennium project for 2000. It incorporates the use of the symbol and colours of the Canadian Flag and material trim which contained miniature red maple leafs on a white background. Since the museum is required to raise 85% of their own budget on an annual basis it was decided to make the project another fund-raiser for that year. We adopted a quilt idea from the past and chose to charge people $5 each to have their name hand embroidered on the quilt. Some asked if they could pay for a deceased family member's name to be included and we agreed. In those triangles we added an embroidered cross above the name.

Town and area business who wanted representation on quilt were placed along the border for $10 a name and the four corners went to businesses who were willing to pay $25 for their block. We display this quilt once a year starting the last Tuesday in June until the second Saturday in July. When you stop to see the quilt sign, drop in to view (free of charge) a photograph of the whole quilt and more information and photos on the volunteers whose skill created our very own autograph/signature quilt for the 21st century!
